VE Day – Wanstone Guns Open Day

May 11 @ 9:30 am - 12:00 pm

As part of the VE Day Celebrations, take a guided tour of the spectacular gun sites, magazine, crew shelter and the D2 Battle of Britain 3.7-inch heavy anti-aircraft battery. All laid hidden since the 1960s.

The remains of one of the Second World War cross-channel guns, nicknamed ‘Jane’, were uncovered at Wanstone, near Dover, Kent. Then, in February 2024 we rediscovered the ‘Clem’ emplacement. These made up the largest gun battery ever built in Britain, and the largest breech-loaded weapons ever installed on British soil. The guns could fire a 1980 lb shell 26 miles.

The National Trust have volunteered their team of friendly volunteers to welcome you and share the detailed history of the site, together with actual plans of the gun sites and images of the guns in action.

Weather permitting the additional parking area for this event, accessed from Upper Road, opposite Sherley’s Farm. www.what3words.com/fidelity.book.approve will be available. This parking is just 300 metres from the sites.

The car park opens at 9.30am and will be locked at 10.10am. Tour to start at 10.00 – walking tour for 2 hours

Supervised children are welcome.

Meeting point
