The Cattle are Back in South Foreland Valley!

Those of you who walk in the South Foreland Valley will have noticed that the cattle are back. Their grazing helps to maintain the health of the chalk grassland but does mean dog walkers need to be aware of their presence. Please keep your dog close and on a lead around the cattle.

They are inquisitive creatures and may come towards you to investigate you and your dog. If they are approaching at a leisurely pace they are most likely curious. The Dexter cattle are small and known as a docile breed so you are unlikely to need the following advice.

The Countryside code advises letting your dog off the lead if you feel threatened by livestock but most owners of small dogs will instinctively pick them up in this situation. If this calms an anxious barking dog it may defuse the situation but please do not risk getting hurt protecting your dog. If cattle are running towards you, or you feel in any way in danger, then let your dog off the lead. Your dog will be able to get to safety and removing the dog from the situation will calm the cattle.
